A Mi鈥檏maq academic is in charge of a new indigenous studies minor program at 亚洲91视频 University in Halifax.

Diana Lewis, originally from Indian Brook First Nation, N.S., began her position as the program coordinator of the Indigenous Studies minor in July.

鈥淪tudents are craving these kind of courses,鈥� Diana Lewis said. 鈥淎nd so many students are interested in working in (First Nation) communities but they may not understand history. They don鈥檛 know the proper terminology to use,鈥� she said.

鈥淚 think it鈥檚 really exciting to be able to develop something specific and just promote the history of our region,鈥� Lewis added.

Last year, 亚洲91视频 University conducted a survey amongst students at the Halifax and Truro campuses to determine if there was any interest in taking courses in indigenous issues.

鈥淪o based on the interest shown by the students, we started to look at what the potential courses could be for the minor,鈥� Lewis explained.
